Landlocked County Laois is home to one of Ireland's most historic sites, the Rock of Dunamaise. As early as the ninth century, battles have been fought for control of the formidable limestone outcropping. The rock stands prominently high on a mostly flat terrain with panoramic views overlooking the surrounding countryside as far as the Slieve Bloom Mountains, which is why it was such a sought after fortress throughout the centuries. Besides the many historic houses and churches that fill the idyllic county, the natural surroundings provide plenty of opportunities for hiking, horse riding, and biking. The verdant parkland is also the perfect setting for the county's seven golf courses. Of these seven, three in particular stand out: the Heath Golf Club, the Heritage Golf & Country Club in Killenard, and Mountrath Golf Club. Opened in 1892 the Heath is one of Ireland's oldest and most challenging inland links courses. The Heritage and Mountrath are also known for being not only two of Ireland's most challenging rounds, but also two of the most scenic with stunning views that stretch to the Slieve Bloom Mountains.
