With a population of less than 60,000 people, County Roscommon is one the least populated of Ireland's 32 counties. The River Shannon and its lakes outline the eastern border of the country and Lough Key, notable for having 32 islands, lies in the northwest part of the county. Roscommon is the 11th largest county in area, but its lack of population is due to the somewhat poor farmland. While it may not have as many historic sites as other Irish counties, there are a few noteworthy attractions such as Boyle Abbey and Strokesdown Park House.

While the land may not be conducive to habitation, the secluded moors and rugged mountains are the ideal setting for golf. One of the most popular of the six golf courses in the county is Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club. The parkland layout wraps around Drumharlow Lake and the Boyle River, creating a maze of treacherous water hazards. One feature all of the courses in Roscommon share is the abundance of mature trees. On many golf courses they present more of a challenge than the bunkers and water hazards combined.
